Gusmao to run for president of former Indonesian territory
East Timor independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, has confirmed he will run for president of the former Indonesian territory which will become the world's newest nation on May 20. Mr Gusmao has the backing of 11 of the 16 political parties.
The elected president will take office on May the 20th, the day East Timor is due to become formally independent.
Analysts say Mr Gusmao enjoys broad-based support and popularity and recently held several community meetings throughout the tiny territory The United Nations has administered East Timor since late 1999, following violence by pro-Jakarta militias after a referendum that saw an overwhelming vote for independence from Indonesia.
