Regional people smuggling conference opens in Bali

The first regional conference on people smuggling has been opened by Indonesia's president on the island of Bali.

In an apparent reference to Australia, Megawati Sukarnoputri attacked what she called impatient governments which take unilateral action against refugees and asylum seekers.

She says regional action is the only way to deal with people smuggling, because unilateral action is ineffective and provokes negative judgement from others.

Indonesian observers say the speech is an attack on Australia's so-called megaphone diplomacy in the Tampa affair, and on Malaysia for its current policy of expelling illegal Indonesian workers.

The two-day ministerial conference on People Smuggling and Transnational crime is being attended by representatives of 56 countries.
