Muslims attack train in Indian state of Gujarat
India's Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has condemned an attack on a train carrying Hindu activists in Gujarat, saying national security will be maintained at all costs.
The chief administrator of the district where the attack took place says the death toll could be as high as 30 and at least 23 passengers injured in the attack had been admitted to hospital
The train was stoned and set on fire by a mob in a Muslim-dominated area of the western state of Gujarat, as the activists were returning from the northern town of Ayodhya.
Thousands of right-wing Hindus have been gathering there to build a temple on the ruins of a 16th century mosque that was razed by zealots in 1992.
In condemning the attack Mr Vajpayee also urged the group leading the Ayodhya movement, the World Hindu Council, to stop the campaign.
