Foreign Minister says comments aimed at Malaysia, not Australia

Indonesia has criticised regional governments that take unilateral action to keep refugees outside their borders.

Opening the People Smugglng conference in Bali, Indonesia's President Megawati Sukarnoputri says impatient governments have provoked negative judgments.

Australia's Foreign Minster, Alexander Downer claims the comments were directed at Malaysia ... not Australia.

"I know absolutely it wasn't a reference to Australia. We're not only assured it wasn't a reference to Australia ... I wasn't so defensive as to ask because it never occurred to me that it would be a reference to Australia ... but I have been told by what you might describe as very senior Indonesian sources what the point of that remark was ... but it's nothing to do with Australia ... it has no relationship to us."
