Jakarta planning to discontinue scholarships to East Timorese
Jakarta is planning to discontinue scholarships to some 11-hundred East Timorese students in Indonesia.
Indonesia's Antara news agency quotes the Indonesian education and culture's higher education directorate general, Darmaji, says there are many Indonesians in need of such scholarships.
He says continue to give East Timorses access to scholarships could cause "social jealousy" amongst Indonesians.
The UN Transitional Administration in East Timor has urged Indonesia to continue the subsidy which had been promised by former president Abdurrahman Wahid in 1999 for three years.
