Supporters wants Khmer Rouge leader released from jail
In Cambodia supporters of one of the senior figures in the notorious Khmer Rouge regime, Ta Mok, have petitioned the United Nations for his release from jail.
Officials say a petition that was also received by the government warned of protests this week unless the former military chief is released.
The petitioners asked for Ta Mok to be released into their custody and saying they will guarantee he would be delivered to court in the event of being brought to trial.
It warned that demonstrations would be held outside of Cambodia's National Assembly this week if their demands were not met.
Ta Mok is the only member of the Khmer Rouge Central Committee in detention and was jailed in March 1999 on charges of genocide.
