Burma's junta confirms anti-coup purge Burma's ruling military Junta has confirmed that a purge of its ranks is underway to prevent a coup toppling the regime. Burma's ruling generals are feeling insecure, enough to order the sacking of the nation's police and airforce chiefs, along with two of Burma's key military commanders. The reason is an alleged coup plot against Burma's most powerful Troika, Senior General Than Shwe, Army Chief Maung Aye and Secretary Number one, Lieutenant General Khin Myunt. Leading the alleged push is said to be the family of Burma's reclusive and ageing former dictator, Ne Win, who still has aspirations to leadership according to a spokesman for the general's apparently under siege. Ne Win's family members have been detained, their alleged guilt as uncertain as the Junta's entire explanation of the last week's extraordinary events. 13/03/2002 14:10:49 | ABC Radio Australia News
