Xanana Gusmao starts presidential campaign in East Timor

East Timor independence leader, Xanana Gusmao, has launched his campaign for the presidency of what will be the world's newest nation, calling for peace and reconcilation.

Mr Gusmao told a cheering crowd of more than one-thousand people in a Dili gymnasium that a spirit of unity must continue to guide East Timor.

He said reconciliation was an integral part in the process of unity.

Mr Gusmao, accompanied by his wife and their baby son, said his only purpose in life was to serve East Timor and the people.
