North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-Il has promoted 54 senior military commanders in a reshuffle to mark the 90th birthday of his late father.

State media says that in a decree issued by Mr Kim, General Jang Song-U became one of the North's 13 vice marshals.

Mr Kim also raised the rank of three generals, five colonel generals, five lieutenant generals and 40 major generals.

The North's supreme leader praised the commanders of the North's 1.2 million-strong armed forces for their "patriotic devotion and efforts to glorify their military service."
