Australian government urged to clarify allowances to troops in East T

Australia's Opposition says the Government must immediately clarify what allowances will be paid to troops serving in East Timor.

There's confusion as to whether soldiers will continue to be paid the allowance for serving in war-like conditions.

A spokeswoman for the Defence Minister, Robert Hill, says the allowances haven't been finalised, because the United Nations is yet to decide on the conditions peacekeepers will be working under.

But Labor's defence spokesman, Chris Evans, says soldiers being sent to East Timor next week need certainty about what they'll be paid.

This is purely a call for the Australian government, its about what we pay our soldiers we understand they've made a decision, but they haven't told the troops. These guys are shipping out to a dangerous situation and at the last minute they've been told there'll be a change in their conditions but they don't know what.
