FBI Director concerned that Afghan terrorists may flee to Asia
The Director of America's Federal Bureau of Investigation says he is concerned that members of Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda militant network might flee from Afghanistan and try to hide in Southeast Asia.
Philippine Presidential National Security Adviser Roilo Golez says Robert Mueller raised the concern in talks shortly after he arrived in the Philippine capital on the latest leg of his tour of the region.
Mr Golez says the FBI is concerned that al Qaeda members under military pressure in Afghanistan would flee and try to hide in various places, including Southeast Asia.
He said he told Mueller that the Philippines, on the orders of President Gloria Arroyo, had imposed a "tight terrorist watch" immediately after the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. Mr Golez says his talks with the FBI director also covered the need for intelligence sharing and tighter implementation of anti-money laundering laws.
