Full extent of al-Qaeda in southeast Asia yet to be shown, FBI
The United States says it has yet to uncover the full extent of Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda terrorist network in Southeast Asia despite the arrest of dozens of militants.
The chief of America's Federal Bureau of Investigation, Robert Mueller, says remnants of al-Qaeda are likely to have sought sanctuary in countries in Southeast Asia.
Mr Mueller, who is in Singapore is due to visit Indonesia. At a forum organised by the American Chamber of Commerce, Mr Mueller praised the actions taken by Singapore and Malaysia which led to the arrest of suspected Islamic militants with alleged links to al-Qaeda.
He said the F-B-I was in the process of building rapport with its counterpart in Indonesia.
Jakarta has been criticised by some U-S officials for failing to wage a similar crackdown on extremists, but the F-B-I chief said Indonesia has special challenges in coping with the problem.
