Immigration Department says deportation sends strong message

Australia's Immigration Department says the deportation of 28 people to Vietnam sends a strong message that Australia will continue to fight people smuggling to preserve the integrity of its borders.

A charter flight took the Vietnamese group, comprising 20 men, four women and four children, from Cocos islands, off the West Australian coast.

They are now back in Vietnam.

The Immigration Department says the group was being detained on Cocos Islands after seeking to enter Australia without authority, and was returned to Vietnam with the co-operation of the Vietnamese Government.
