Singapore minister warns of al-Qaeda seeking safe havens
Singapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew says Southeast Asia must act to deny Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network a safe haven as its members flee bases in Afghanistan.
In a commentary in Forbes magazine, Mr Lee warned that if al-Qaeda operatives found a haven in the region they would be able to attack US missions, military personnel, ships and aircraft.
He said Al-Qaeda needed new safe havens to regroup and it could not be allowed to find them in Southeast Asia.
Mr Lee, the founder of modern Singapore and its first prime minister, plays an influential role as senior minister in the cabinet and is regarded as an elder statesman in the region.
