Indonesian president arrives in China to boost economic ties
Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri has arrived in China to boost economic ties, as the two countries signed deals deepening cooperation in energy and diplomacy. After talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, she witnessed the signing of five deals, including one for a partnership between China's biggest oil firm, PetroChina, and Indonesia's state-owned Pertamina.
Several cabinet ministers, including the mines and energy chief, accompanied Megawatti and some 200 business executives on the trip designed to bolster economic links with China.
Her visit will also be a chance to seek support in the face of stepped up U.S. pressure to do more in the war on terror, which many in Indonesia have opposed. Relations between China and Indonesia, first established in 1950, were suspended after Jakarta accused Beijing of backing a communist coup in 1965.
In 1990, the two resumed ties and since then relations have slowly been getting back on track.
