China reinforces its disapproval over America's contacts with Taiwan

China has moved to reinforce its disapproval over recent American political contacts with Taiwan by banning a naval ship visit and an exchange.

China correspondent, Tom O'Byrne, reports the cancellations are what diplomats say are a common register of China's displeasure:

"China's foreign ministry reacted angrily earlier this month when Taiwan's Defence Minister, Tang Yiau-ming held talks with officials from the Bush administration during a visit to Florida. Now it's told the US consulate in Hong Kong that an American warship, the USS Curtis Wilbur wont be allowed dock in Hong Kong early next month. Local businesses had lobbied Beijing not to impose a ban because a ship visit could help Hong Kong's flagging economy. But, last week Chinese officials also confirmed that the Chinese navy would not be including American ports during a Pacific tour. A foreign ministry official would not say when the current ban will be lifted.
