China criticises Israel over Arafat
China has told Israel its restrictions on Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, breach the norms of international law.
China's official media says Foreign Minister, Tang Jiaxuan, who has held talks with his Israeli counterpart, Shimon Peres, also criticised Israel for invading Palestinian territory on a large scale and restricting Mr Arafat's personal freedom.
Mr Tang said Israel's actions not only violated the norms of international law and agreements between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, but also harmed Israel's international image.
He expressed concern over the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East, and called on both sides to implement a ceasefire as soon as possible to facilitate a resumption of talks.
Arab leaders were due to arrive in the Lebanese capital, Beirut today to consider a Saudi peace plan to end 18-months of violence in the Middle East.
