China's Premier says Beijing firmly opposed to US Taiwan policies
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji has told a group of visiting US senators that Beijing was firmly opposed to Washington's Taiwan policies.
Mr Zhu told senators Daniel Inouye and Ted Stevens that Washington had violated three Sino-US communiques by allowing Taiwan Defence Minister Tang Yiau-ming into the United States for defence talks earlier this month.
He says the communiques lay out the basis for relations between China and the United States and reflect US recognition of Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan. The US has pledged to maintain unofficial links with Taiwan, but to reduce arms sales gradually to the island which Beijing regards as a rebel province which must be reunited with the mainland by force if necessary. Mr Zhu says he hopes the United States will make concerted efforts "to earnestly keep to the consensus" and do more to promote the "mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries".
