Cambodia still mulling US asylum offer for Vietnamese

Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen, says he is still considering a United States offer of asylum for one-thousand refugees who fled across the border from Vietnam.

Mr Hun Sen says no decision on the U-S request has yet been made.

His comment follows a request by Washington that Phnom Penh respond as quickly as possible which would allow the Montagnard hill-tribes people safe passage out of Cambodia and to the U-S.

Washington offered asylum to the refugees, contingent upon an approval by Phnom Penh, after the United Nations pulled-out of a repatriation scheme, claiming Cambodia and Vietnam had violated the terms of the accord.
