US airman receives 32-month jail for Okinawa rape
A Japanese court has sentenced a United States airman to 32-months jail for raping a local woman.
The district court in Naha, capital of the southern island of Okinawa, ruled that 25-year-old U-S Air Force Staff Sergeant, Timothy Woodland, was guilty of raping the 24-year-old woman last June.
The judge said the crime was horrendous and added that Woodland had shown no signs of remorse.
Woodland had pleaded not guilty, saying the sex was consensual.
Defence lawyers say a decision on whether to appeal will be made after consulting with Woodland.
Reuters newsagency says the case, which follows a series of incidents involving U-S servicemen, helped reignite simmering resentment towards American forces in Okinawa.
