Nepali leaders urge Maoist rebels to call of five day strike
Political leaders in Nepal have urged Maoist rebels to call off a planned five-day strike to start this week saying it will disrupt the economy and exams for school leavers.
The Maoists, who have been fighting since 1996 to overthrow the monarchy, have called the strike from tomorrow to force the government to meet certain demands, including that the constitution be rewritten.
The leaders, at an all-party meeting organized by the ruling Nepali Congress, also condemned vandalism by Maoists, such as the destruction of administration and development offices. They also vowed to protect the multi-party democracy installed in 1990 by working to improve the governance of the Himalayan kingdom.
Officials say this referred to the need to make the government more service-oriented, improve efficiency and stop corruption.
