Indonesia's former military chief blames UN for bloodshed in E-Timor
Indonesia's former military chief Wiranto has indirectly blamed the United Nations for the bloodshed that erupted after East Timor voted for independence in 1999.
General Wiranto says the violence was triggered by what he calls an "unfair ballot".
Wiranto made the statement after testifying at a special human rights court trying Indonesian suspects over the mayhem that left more than one-thousand people dead.
He was military chief when machete-wielding, pro-Indonesia militias backed by army elements went on a killing spree after the vote result was announced.
The run-up was also marred by violence, most of which was blamed on the militias. Indonesia opened its first trials into the East Timor violence at the special human rights court on March 14th.
