Calls for Jakarta to take harder line against islamic militants

Indonesia's former President Abdurahman Wahid says the government should take a harder line against islamic militants in the archipelago.

Justice Minister Yusril Mahendra revealed this week that an anti-terrorist bill will be introduced in parliament by June, but won't contain what he calls "draconian clauses", such as summary arrest and detention powers.

Mr Wahid says the bill is no longer 'anti-terrorist' and its weakness may partly be attributed to some of President Megawati's key advisors:

"They fear the militant muslims in Indonesia. They don't recognise the fact that those people are very miniscule, very small minority and we can beat them in time. Their influence is not there."
