Top UN envoy meets Burma's military in bid to free Aung San Suu Kyi
A top United Nations envoy has met with Burma's military leadership and opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, in a bid to secure her release from house arrest and breath life into slow-moving talks between the two sides. UN special envoy Razali Ismail had a two-hour meeting with Ms Suu Kyi at her home, where the Nobel laureate has been confined since late 2000. The Malaysian diplomat also met powerful military intelligence chief Khin Nyunt, officially number three in the ruling junta.
Diplomats have told the Reuters news agency that Mr Razali is lobbying hard for Ms Suu Kyi's immediate freedom, and suggest the envoy could even resign if he leaves Burma empty handed.
A UN official is quoted by Reuters as saying that Mr Razali has also asked for a meeting with the junta's leader, Than Shwe, but had not yet received a reply.
