China says visits by Taiwan lawmakers on increase
China says visits by members of Taiwan's pro-independence ruling party had increased since Beijing extended them a formal invitation three months ago. Vice-Premier Qian Qichen's January 24th speech welcomed members of Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's Democratic Progressive Party to visit the mainland in an "appropriate" capacity.
This was seen as a signal that Beijing was taking a softer line toward its rival. Chinese officials say since then, there were clearly more DPP members coming to China to tour, visit and participate in exchanges.
China says it welcomes the Taiwanese politicians and hopes their visits will promote the development of cross-Straits ties.
China regards Taiwan as a rebel province and has threatened to invade if it declares independence or drags its feet on reunification.
