Nepal's Moaist rebels to go haed with nationwide 5-day strike
Nepal's Maoist rebels say they will go ahead with a five-day nationwide strike despite appeals from all mainstream parties and the business community for them to drop the action.
Maoist supremo Pushpa Kamal Dahal, has demanded total support for the shutdown.
The Maoist leader, who wants to topple the constitutional monarchy and establish a communist state, blasted Nepal's royal family and the army for their crackdown on the rebels.
But in a change of rhetoric, he refrained from criticizing India or the United States, which he regularly chastises for their "imperialist" policies. The statement came as a US military team toured Maoist strongholds to advise Nepal on how to put down the six-year insurgency.
