China protests Japanese PM's visit to shrine by cancelling high-level
China has postponed a visit by Japan's defence chief and a port call in Japan of a Chinese warship to protest Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's trip to a controversial war shrine.
Chinese officials say the Japanese leader's visit to the Yasukuni Shrine has hurt the Chinese people's feelings, and harmed Sino-Japanese relations.
The Chinese foreign ministry says Beijing believes that at this time it is not appropriate to carry out these two activities.
A trip to China by the head of the Japan Defense Agency, General Nakatani, was originally scheduled for late April, while a vessel of the People's Liberation Army Navy was set to have visited Japan in mid-May. China's reaction came after Mr Koizumi's visit last Sunday to Tokyo's Yasukuni Shrine, a symbol of Japan's wartime imperialism.
Those honored include 14 designated as Class A criminals by the Allies in trials that followed World War Two.
