Indonesian minister says president is planning to travel to East Timor
Reports in Indonesia say President Megawati Sukarnoputri is planning to attend East Timor's Independence Day next month, despite strong opposition from members of parliament.
The state Antara news agency has quoted top security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as saying the president is planning to be present at the celebration.
However, the AFP news agency says the minister has declined to elaborate and a spokesman for the president's secretariat said he had no information on the decision.
Legislators, including the speakers of the lower and upper houses of parliament, have called on Megawati not to attend the East Timorese independence celebrations.
They said it's too soon after losing East Timor, which was Indonesia's territory for 24 years.
Jakarta relinquished East Timor to the United Nations in October 1999 following the overwhelming pro-independence result of a UN-run ballot in August that year.
