Talks over North Korean refugee in Germany's Beijing embassy

Talks are continuing over the fate of a North Korean refugee who claimed asylum at the German embassy in the Chinese capital Beijing.

Embassy officials say intensive negotiations are underway with the Chinese, and there are hopes that he may soon be allowed to leave.

The Philippine foreign ministry had earlier announced it would allow the man to travel to South Korea via Manila, as a humanitarian gesture.

The man scaled the wall outside the more than two-metre embassy compound on Thursday night.

A swift deal would end a potential diplomatic problem for China, which officially treats refugees from its ally North Korea as economic migrants and is obliged to deport them.

The incident comes little more than a month after 25 North Koreans burst into the Spanish embassy in Beijing and sought refuge, threatening suicide if they were sent home.

They were also allowed to go to Seoul via the Philippines.
