Sri Lankan army to begin recruitment drive in Tamil Tiger territory
The Sri Lankan army has launched its first recruitment drive since a peace bid with the Tamil Tigers began last year.
Military officials say the new recruits will replenish rather than swell the ranks of the army -- potentially one of the country's biggest problems, should Norwegian-brokered talks end the ethnic war.
The Sri Lankan Army says it wants five-thousand new recruits and doesn't believe the recruitment goes against the spirit of the peace process.
For the first time in years, recruitment centres will be open in the predominantly Tamil northeast, the main recruiting ground of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
