Australia says a free trade pact with Japan remains a long-term goal

Australia's Foreign Affairs Minister, Alexander Downer, says a free-trade pact with Japan remains a long-term goal.

Japanese Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, arrives in Canberra today for talks on defence and trade ties.

Mr Downer says Japan is an increasingly important security partner in the region, as well as being Australia's largest trading partner.

" We can see a growing agricultural trade between Australia and Japan and our services sector and Japan's services sector can work much closer together than has been the case up until now".
