International Whaling Commissionto discuss Japan's whale catches
An International Whaling Commission panel is to discuss Japan's alleged manipulation of whale catches.
The closed-door Science Committee has invited a university professor and a former executive of a now-dissolved whaling company to submit a report on Japan's suspected under-reporting of its coastal whale catches in the 1960s and 1970s.
The Kyodo newsagency reports that the submission of the report marks the first time a party concerned has admitted to the IWC that a country manipulated data concerning its whale catches. The committee, on which some 170 scientists from 25 countries sit, will report the outcome of their 13-day session at the Whaling Commission's general assembly convening next month. It's also expected to discuss Japan's controversial new "research" whaling program, which recently was expanded to cover endangered sei whales.
