China denounces Maoist violencein Nepal

China's government has denounced violence by Maoist rebels that has swept the neighbouring Himalayan kingdon of Nepal.

The Nepalese Foreign Secretary has just returned to Kathmandu after a week-long trip to Moscow and Beijing.

During his stay in Beijing Mr Acharya had a series of meetings with senior officials and discussed the Maoist rebellion in Nepal.

He says the Chinese have assured him of their cooperation in controlling the six-year-old insurgency and assured him they will not allow the guerrillas to enter Tibet, which borders Nepal.

The Chinese officials strongly denounced the rebels saying they are misusing the name of Chairman Mao Zedong, who established the People's Republic of China in 1949.
