New Zealand PM in Jakarta talks
New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark has held talks in Jakarta with Indonesian leaders on regional anti-terror efforts and illegal migrants, saying the two countries were widely different but had a common goal of regional stability.
Ms Clark met President Megawati Sukarnoputri and senior officials at the presidential palace on the second day of her three-day trip to the country.
Thousands of illegal migrants, mostly from Afghanistan and the Middle East, have arrived in Indonesia in recent years before attempting to enter Australia illegally by sea.
New Zealand has taken in several hundred of these refugees but has also called for a crackdown on the activities of people smugglers.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda also says Ms Clark had been informed of a regional anti-terror pact to be signed in Kuala Lumpur today between Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines.
Officials have said Thailand and possibly Burma may join the pact later.
The New Zealand prime minister goes on to Singapore later today.
