Injured French survivors of bombing flown out of Karachi
The 12 French survivors of a suicide bomb attack in Karachi are flying back to their homeland in a specially equipped German plane.
Fourteen people were killed 11 of them French navy engineers, and 22 others wounded, when a suicide bomber in a car packed with explosives blew up a bus outside a luxury hotel on Wednesday morning.
The wounded men were ferried in a fleet of ambulances with a team of German and French doctors to Karachi airport where a German Airbus which had flown from Berlin, took off for the eight-hour flight to Paris. The engineers were working on a project with the Pakistan Navy to build two submarines, and would typically come to Karachi for tours lasting one to two months.
Security in Karachi, a city of 14 million, has been tightened, with paramilitary rangers posted around the entrances of hotels, road junctions and elsewhere.
France's new Defence Minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, arrived in Karachi on Thursday, and under heavy security, visited the wounded French and Pakistani victims, and briefly toured the bomb site.
