Indonesia says 'no' to American troops

Indonesia's Defence Minister Matori Abdul Djalil says his country will not allow American forces on its soil to help in the fight against terrorism, arguing Indonesia remains confident in the ability of its own forces to deal with such threats.

The minister was speaking in Washington after talks with his American counterpart, Donald Rumsfeld.

Congress cut US military ties in 1999 after bloodshed swept East Timor when the territory voted to break from Jakarta.

But Mr Rumsfeld says while human rights violations led to the restrictions, they should now be "adjusted substantially," describing Indonesia as an important, democratic and moderate Muslim state.
