Death sentence for Indonesian found guilty of Jakarta bombings
An Indonesian Muslim who helped stage the bombing of a Jakarta shopping mall as part of a series of planned attacks on Christian targets has been sentenced to death.
Edi Setiono, 41, was convicted at Central Jakarta district court of possessing and using explosives.
On May 7 the same court had sentenced Setiono's Malaysian accomplice to death over the bombing at the Atrium Senen mall on August the first last year.
Judge Sirande Panayukan says a group of which Setiono was a member had planned to conduct several bombings of Christian places of worship. Indonesia's government has been under mounting international pressure, since the September 11 bombings in the United States, to act firmly against Muslim terrorists allegedly active in the world's largest Muslim-populated nation.
