Portugal slashes funds to former colony East Timor
Portugal's new centre-right government says it will slash 10 million dollars in aid to former colony East Timor but will continue covering part of its debt payments. A government spokesman says Lisbon will reduce the amount of aid from the current 60 million per year to just over 50 million dollars US.
The reduction is a result of budgetary constraints.
But Portugal says it will cotinue its commitment to pay 10 percent of East Timor's debt over the next three years.
With a population of 750-thousand, East Timor will be Asia's poorest nation when it becomes independent at midnight Sunday
