Cambodia remembers souls of those who perished under Pol Pot

Cambodia has remembered the souls of more than 1.7 million who perished under Pol Pot's ruthless reign, marking Commemoration Day with prayers and letters to the dead.

Commemoration Day was once known as National Hate Day.

Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge ruled Cambodia between 1975 and 1979.

Many of the dead perished through genocide, illness and starvation brought on by Pol Pot's push to establish an agrarian utopia.
