Canada to lift most sanctions against India

Canada is to lift most of the political and economic sanctions it imposed on India almost three years ago to punish New Delhi for carrying out a series of nuclear tests.

Foreign Minister John Manley says Canada will restore normal relations with India and resume development aid.

However, it will maintain restrictions on exports of military equipment.

Canada imposed a ban on ministerial visits, froze some development aid and temporarily withdrew its high commissioner in May 1998 after India detonated five nuclear test devices.
