Six million Indonesians suffer mental problems
A World Health Organisation report has found that at least six million Indonesians suffer from psychological or mental problems.
The report says of those about 90 percent lack proper medication or treatment.
Health Minister, Ahmad Suyudi, said the government was trying to cope with the problem by providing medicine and consultations at every community health post around the country.
The minister said that the health posts would be able to recommend patients with severe mental illness to any of the 33 mental rehabilitation centres or hospitals nationwide.
Mr Suyudi said the government had been implementing the consultation scheme since 1996.
A 1995 household health survey said the prevalence of mental disturbance in Indonesia was 264 people out of every one-thousand with most patients aged above 14 suffering from emotional distress.
