Thousands of Madurese refugees seek police shelter in Borneo
Thousands of migrant settlers have sought police protection in Indonesian Borneo after ethnic clashes left two dead and several houses torched.
Pangkalan Bun, in Kotawaringin Timur district, is the latest town in Central Kalimantan to hit by ethnic violence between Dayak tribesmen and migrant settlers from Madura.
The Kompas daily reported that at least 13-hundred refugees are sheltering at a transit centre, also heavily guarded by soldiers and police.
Kompas quoted the district police chief, as saying more than 20-thousand Madurese had fled to other provinces since a bloody Dayak purge of settlers began in February.
The violence first erupted in the neighbouring district town of Sampit, leaving more than 500 dead across the province, mostly Madurese.
More than 70-thousand Madurese have fled or been evacuated.
