Veteran East Timor independence leader appointed to head National Coun
A veteran of East Timor's independence struggle has been elected to head the territory's transitional legislature.
Manuel Carrascalao was named speaker of the National Council after rival candidate, Nobel Peace laureate Jose Ramos Horta, withdrew from the ballot. Mr Ramos Horta said Mr Carrascalao was a fighter and a very courageous man.
Mr Carrascalao's appointment follows the surprise resignation last month of Xanana Gusmao, who was widely expected to be the first president of an independent East Timor.
He quit the council citing infighting over a constitution for East Timor.
