UNHCR grants refugee status to 24 Vietnamese in Cambodia
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has granted refugee status to 24 Vietnamese who fled to Cambodia amid a government crackdown in the central highlands.
In a statement, the United States embassy in Phnom Penh said it had been informed that all 24 are refugees and have been referred them to the US for resettlement consideration.
US ambassador Kent Wiedemann has told the AFP news agency it's likely the formalities for resettlement will be finished by next week at the latest.
Cambodian officials said they had been informed of the UN verdict and urged the Vietnamese government to accept it.
The 24 Vietnamese from the Montagnard minority crossed into northeast Cambodia in the middle of last month, and were arrested in Mondulkiri province.
Last week, Vietnam demanded the US "immediately end its interference" in the case.
