ceasefire in Sri Lanka broken as Tigers fire on Navy boat
Sri Lankan troops and Tamil Tiger rebels are reportedly locked in a ferocious sea battle -- shattering their separate ceasefires.
The Sri Lankan Defence Ministry says two rebels were killed and four were seriously wounded in the pre-dawn exchange.
The fighting shattered a truce declared separately by both sides amid moves by Norway to broker face-to-face talks between the Sri Lankan government and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
The government did not immediately indicate if it would extend its truce, set to expire at dawn today, while the Tamil Tigers' ceasefire is set to expire on April 24. Defence ministry officials say the fierce fight near the coast of Chalai was triggered when a flotilla of boats operated by the LTTE opened fire on a navy patrol craft.
