Indian police shoot dead eight militants in Kashmir

Indian police in Kashmir say they have shot dead eight Muslim militants belonging to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit in a joint operation with the army.

The militants were shot after crossing the border into the district of Kathua, some 65 kilometres south of the Kashmiri winter capital Jammu.

A police official said the militants had fired first, injuring three security personnel, including an army captain.

India suspended counter-insurgency operations against militant groups in Kashmir on November 28th.

The unilateral ceasefire has since been extended three times and is due to expire at the end of May.
