India advances in the space race

India has made a major leap into the space race, after successfully launching a new rocket carrying an experimental satellite into orbit.

South Asia correspondent Jonathan Harley reports.

India's most powerful rocket, the Geosynchronys satellite launch vehicle blasted off on schedule from the Sriharikota base in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Scientists cheered and hugged following the successful launch after the first attempt last month failed because of a faulty booster engine. India's now on its way to joining the US, Russia, the Euroepan Space Agency and China as a major space power. If the rest of this operation succeeds it could enter the lucrative commercial satellite launch market.
