Sri Lanka navy reportedly sinks four rebel boats in battle
Sri Lanka says its navy gunboats are locked in fierce fighting with a flotilla of Tamil rebel craft, sinking at least four of the guerrilla vessels.
A government defence ministry spokesman says fast attack craft destroyed the four boats of the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, off the coast of Chalai where there was a similar battle on Monday.
The spokesman says another three boats escaped and the air force has been called in to pursue the attack.
He said there were no casualties among the navy personnel in the fighting which initially involved about four gunboats before the navy sent reinforcements.
