Sweeping reforms to be initiated in India's defence purchases
The Indian government is set to introduce sweeping reforms of its military procurement process, which has been severely tarnished by corruption scandals.
A report submitted to parliament by a high-powered committee of all-party MPs has suggested the constitution of a Defence Procurement Board to make vital decisions on buying defence equipments . .
The board will be an integrated organisation having representatives of the ministry of defence and serving and retired officers of the army, air force and navy. The committee recommendation, which awaits parliament's approval, has coincided with the fallout of an Internet website expose that caught senior politicians, civil servants and military officials taking money from journalists posing as arms dealers. The scandal has paralysed India's parliament and forced the resignation of defence minister George Fernandes.
While approving the setting up of a separate board for military purchases, the parliamentary committee has gone a step ahead and asked for a complete revamp of the procurement process.
