Indonesia braces for surge of tourists from China
Indonesia's government says it's moving quickly to select tourist agencies to handle the first arrivals of an expected 1.3 million Chinese tourists to visit annually.
Tourism Minister I Gde Ardika says China has for the first time listed Indonesia as an official tourist destination, and the first groups are due to arrive this month or in August.
But he says Beijing has set stringent requirements.
Each Chinese tour group must be accompanied by a Mandarin-speaking guide and the itinerary clearly notified in advance.
The government-approved Indonesian agencies must also liaise with a limited number of Chinese travel agencies responsible for what's termed "ensuring the arrival and departure of their clients."
Indonesia's tourism industry has been hard hit by the Asian financial crisis and the escalation of ethnic and sectarian unrest in several provinces, which have prompted several regional governments to issue travel warnings.
